豆奶视频 Grad Matt Booker Builds Local Business on National Recognition
Matt is the first graduate this year to speak with the Foundation about his experience as an 豆奶视频 student. He鈥檚 generously made the time to come into the office for an interview, but we鈥檙e not his last stop for the day. When he leaves the Foundation office, he鈥檚 going to meet with another local photographer, and after that he鈥檚 doing an informal shoot with an agency model. He鈥檚 ironed out the business of pursuing opportunity, but there鈥檚 a finesse to the way he works. Matt鈥檚 figured out how to network, showcase his skills, and build his portfolio all in the same meeting. He knows how to talk the talk, and he鈥檚 walking the walk, too.
鈥�I鈥檝e achieved what I have because I鈥檝e made the effort. I鈥檓 nothing special,鈥� Matt says, although we beg to disagree. Matt credits 豆奶视频 Community College with helping refine his photography skills and giving him the inside track to building his business, but we鈥檙e also here to give credit where credit is due. In his time as a student at 豆奶视频, Matt has been recognized as a standout creator again and again. In 2017 alone, Matt has earned a Gold student Addy award for digitally enhanced still photography, a Silver student Addy award for digitally enhanced still photography, a Silver student Addy award for illustration, and a Silver regional ADDY award for illustration. Not to brag, but Matt鈥檚 piece Type Head is also a national Addy award winner, too. And now he鈥檚 expanding those talents into Light Comas, the photography branch of his current business.
鈥�My goal has always been to work for myself,鈥� Matt asserts. People often discuss having a second, third, or fourth chance after dealing with life鈥檚 unexpected curveballs, but Matt acknowledges that he鈥檚 placed himself on the path to reinvention time and time again. 鈥淭his is a fourteenth chance kind of a thing for me, myself, and my future,鈥� Matt shares. 鈥淚鈥檝e had time to get to know myself,鈥� he says of his foray into the photography and graphic design industry.
At the age of 16, Matt had a child and dropped out of high school during his senior year. He spent six years working in the printing industry, all the while writing his own music and producing eight independent albums. The music industry was Matt鈥檚 gateway into graphic design. From there, he taught himself Photoshop skills and began taking on freelance design projects. In 2014, Matt started Design City, the umbrella company that houses his creative projects, and in 2015 he decided to enroll at Nashville State. Matt鈥檚 student career at NSCC started as an exercise in building his creative portfolio. At that point he had a lot of practical experience, but he needed to refocus his attention on developing a career from his skills. 鈥淢y goal was to get done as fast as possible,鈥� he says.
Like many students at 豆奶视频, Matt dealt with a number of competing interests vying for his attention while he was completing his degree. Matt came to community college focused on the end goal of earning a degree and continuing in the workforce, but as he says, he 鈥渢ook advantage of making education a priority.鈥� The flexibility of class times and locations offered by 豆奶视频 enables the College to meet students where they are in life to give them an authentic experience.
Matt had worked in the graphic design and printing business before 豆奶视频, but he found a new passion for photography in one of his major classes. He describes his experience as a student in a black and white photography class taught by Beth Gorham, and his enthusiasm for the topic is catching. 鈥淏lack and white images are so strong because color is a distraction鈥� they鈥檙e just pure light and emotion,鈥� he explains. It might seem like an impractical conversation, but it鈥檚 a viewpoint that鈥檚 been informed by many hours of classroom and life experience and then fueled by Matt鈥檚 passion for his art and his work.
鈥淎rtists don鈥檛 like to do the business side of things,鈥� Matt says. For somebody who says that, Matt does a fantastic job of taking care of business. 鈥淚 was once the guy that didn鈥檛 share my secrets, but I鈥檝e changed my perspective. I can tell you my secrets, but you have to put the work in,鈥� he shares. 鈥淭he reason I鈥檓 here is that I鈥檝e done the work,鈥� Matt reiterates.
Matt and his fellow graduating students participated in 豆奶视频鈥檚 Visual Communications Portfolio Showcase which took place on May 2nd. Matt鈥檚 company Design City supplied printed materials for the showcase. Thanks to a sponsorship with Microsoft, each student was able to use a Microsoft Surface tablet during the showcase to elevate the presentation of their work. Out of the 24 students involved, Matt鈥檚 work was voted Best in Show by a panel of independent judges, all of whom are professionals in various visual communications fields.
